FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
New to fog security? You’re not alone. This FAQ is written for homeowners and small businesses who want fast, effective protection without the jargon. Below you’ll find everything from the basics of how Iron Fog works to safety, installation, costs, and troubleshooting.
Basics
What is a security fog machine?
A security fog machine rapidly fills a room with dense, non-toxic fog that blocks visibility. When intruders can’t see what to steal or where to move, they usually give up and retreat. Cameras record what happened; Iron Fog removes their ability to continue the break-in.
The unit installs discreetly and can be triggered by remote, panic button, smart control (model dependent), or via your alarm system.
How is Iron Fog different from cameras or alarms?
Cameras and alarms are reactive: they notify, record, and call for help. Iron Fog is active defence – it physically removes visibility in seconds so intruders can’t keep searching or carrying things out while you wait for responders.
Is Iron Fog for homes or businesses?
Both. Typical placements include front and back entries, garages, retail shops, offices, stockrooms, and high-value storage. Anywhere a break-in can happen, Iron Fog adds an instant layer of protection on top of your cameras and alarm.
Safety
Is the fog safe to breathe?
Yes. Iron Fog uses a non-toxic, controlled-residue formulation that has been tested and supported by safety reports and certifications. As with any dense fog, people should move carefully and ventilate the room once the situation is under control.
Will the fog damage furniture, electronics, or inventory?
The fog is formulated for indoor environments and electronic equipment. It’s used in spaces with computers, displays, and stock on shelves. For ultra-sensitive areas, the filtered cartridge (HAM-C1F) is designed to further reduce residue.
Is there heat involved?
No pre-heating is required. Iron Fog uses a cold-fog process with instant trigger, so there is no hot plume and no warm-up time before deployment.
Performance
How fast does it work?
The unit triggers in about one second and ejects fog for roughly 15–20 seconds. A standard room reaches near-zero visibility within seconds of activation.
How long does the fog last?
Fog typically lingers for about 30–45 minutes, depending on room size and how much airflow or ventilation is present.
How much space does one unit cover?
With the standard cartridge (HAM-C1), a single unit can cover up to 150 m³ (for example, roughly 662 ft² at an 8 ft ceiling). With the filtered HAM-C1F cartridge, coverage is about 100 m³. Ideal ceiling height is approximately 2.5–3 m.
Does the fog block my cameras too?
Yes, dense fog will also obscure your cameras temporarily – that’s part of how it stops the crime. Your cameras capture the initial breach and activity leading up to deployment; once the fog is active, visibility is removed so theft can’t continue.
Installation
Where should I install Iron Fog?
The best placements are near entry points or choke-points: front and back doors, garage entries, hallways, or corridors leading to valuables. Mount the unit on a wall or ceiling and angle the nozzle so it projects across the path intruders must take.
Can I install it myself?
Many customers self-install using the included mounting bracket and 12 V power adapter. For commercial sites or when you’re integrating with an alarm panel, a qualified installer is recommended.
What power does it need?
Iron Fog Core uses DC 12 V, 3 A power (adapter included) with low power draw between 0–24 W. Some models also support AA battery operation; see the product page for specifics on FL-B / FL-RF / FL-Z&R.
Is placement important?
Yes. Coverage depends on height, angle, and airflow. We recommend a live test in your chosen room to see how the fog behaves, then installing your Refill Cartridge so the system is ready for real events.
Use & Control
How do I trigger the fog?
Trigger options include panic button, on/off switch, RF remote (model dependent), alarm panel input, and TUYA app control on supported models. You can choose the combination that fits your space and security workflow.
Can it integrate with my alarm?
Yes. The trigger inputs (IN+/IN-) can be wired to your alarm panel’s output relay so the fog deploys automatically when the alarm is tripped and conditions are met. Your installer can configure the exact behavior.
What happens after activation?
Once triggered, the unit ejects fog for roughly 15–20 seconds, then enters a power-saving mode. After responders clear the scene, you simply ventilate the area and replace the cartridge so you’re ready again.
Compatibility
Which cartridges does Iron Fog use?
Iron Fog currently supports two cartridge types:
- HAM-C1 – maximum output, up to 150 m³ coverage.
- HAM-C1F – filtered cartridge, about 100 m³ coverage with reduced residue.
Will it work with smart home systems?
Models with TUYA support can be controlled via the TUYA app. For other smart home platforms, Iron Fog can usually be integrated using relay outputs/inputs through your hub or a professional installer.
Maintenance
How often do I replace the cartridge?
Replace the cartridge after any deployment or live test. Keeping a spare Refill Cartridge on hand ensures you’re never offline after an event.
Does the unit need regular servicing?
Routine servicing is minimal. Periodically confirm that the unit is firmly mounted, connections are secure, and your chosen trigger still activates the device during routine security checks.
How do I clean up after a deployment?
Ventilate the space to let the fog clear. In most cases, that’s all that’s needed. If you’d like, you can wipe down high-touch surfaces. Using the filtered HAM-C1F cartridge further reduces residue.
Costs & Value
Is Iron Fog cost-effective compared to other security options?
Yes. A single unit can protect an entire entry zone for far less than guards or complex installed systems. Traditional security tends to record what was lost; Iron Fog focuses on preventing loss in the first place.
I’m a first-time buyer. What should I get?
For new customers, we recommend starting with an Iron Fog Core system plus a Refill Cartridge bundle. This lets you run a live test in your actual space so you know the coverage and feel comfortable using it before you ever need it in an emergency.
Are there ongoing fees?
There are no subscription fees. You only purchase replacement cartridges when you perform a live test or after a real deployment.
Legal & Compliance
Is fog security legal to use at home or work?
In general, yes – when used to protect property. As with any security device, you should follow local laws, building rules, and safety guidance. Commercial locations may wish to consult their security provider or legal counsel.
Does Iron Fog have certifications?
Iron Fog systems are backed by CE and ISO:9001 certifications along with independent non-toxic test reports. A Certifications section is available with summarized and original documents.
Will this affect my insurance?
Many insurers view measures that reduce loss positively. Iron Fog complements monitored alarms and cameras by actively preventing theft. For specifics, check with your insurance provider about how fog security fits into your policy.
Troubleshooting
No fog on trigger – what should I check?
First confirm that the unit has power (12 V adapter seated or batteries installed) and that the cartridge is correctly seated and locked. Then verify your trigger wiring (IN+/IN-) or trigger method. If everything appears correct and the device still won’t fire, contact support.
Coverage looks uneven – what can I do?
Try adjusting the mounting angle so the fog projects more directly across the path intruders would take. You can also reduce airflow by closing doors or vents. Run a controlled test after each change until you’re happy with the coverage.
There’s a bit of residue – is that normal?
Small amounts of residue can appear in some environments. If you want the lowest residue profile possible, use the HAM-C1F filtered cartridge and ensure the room is ventilated after deployment.
